POKÉMON Detective Pikachu – Official Movie Trailer #1 Review

I grew up with Pokémon. About 20 years ago, I started playing the Generation I Pokémon games and started watching the animated television show and collecting the trading cards. I had VHS’s of the Pokémon movies and I had shirts with Pokémon on them. Over the next 10 years, Pokémon remained a big part of my gaming life. But in the last 10 years, it has mostly slipped away. When I heard that there was going to be a live-action movie, I was mostly skeptical. I wasn’t sure if that was going to be a good choice considering how things like this turn out.

That being said, this trailer was NOTHING like what I expected. Based on my expectations, I thought the Pokémon would look really shitty with a lot of colour and personality being drained from them in order for them to look more “realistic”. But they actually look REALLY good. They are still very colourful and they are very textured looking. Half of the trailer is about the lead human character discovering he can understand when Pikachu talks but no one else can. The rest of it is Pikachu acting like a detective alongside the lead human character.

I think this movie will be a huge nostalgia trip and I am excited to see how they designed all of the Pokémon that will appear in the movie.

7/10 – Good
