The debut pop album by Billie Eilish reminds me a bit of Lorde: a young up-and-coming female pop artist with her own sound, trying to push into the public conscience. Except Billie’s singing sounds as if it is the middle of the night and her family is sleeping.
Not a bad debut album, if a bit inconsistent and overly long for what it is. This could have been brought down to 10 tracks and it would have been better. The first half is great, featuring songs like Bad Guy, Xanny, You Should See Me in a Crown, and All the Good Girls Go to Hell. While the second half is also good, it doesn’t quite maintain the same consistency. Songs like Ilomilo and I Love You are as strong as anything off the first half. Speaking of I Love You, I get some SERIOUS Hallelujah vibes, both in the guitar playing and in the beginning of the chorus.
The aforementioned 6 songs would have made for a great little EP. But I’m just not a fan of the length and inconsistency of the project. Seems a little too unfocused for my liking. However, I look forward to what Billie does next as she matures both as a person and artist.
6/10 – Decent
