Year 1 In Review

It has been exactly 1 year since I created the “Jesse Revell Reviews” page on Facebook and posted my first ever review (for the video game ‘Donut County’). Over the past year, I have written 713 scored reviews that have covered movies, music, video games, books, TV shows, trailers, posters, YouTube videos and much more.

I created the graph above as a summary of the 713 reviews that I have written. Each bar represents a specific review score (e.g. 7/10) and the number of reviews I have written where I gave that score to a work (e.g. 192 works received the score 7/10).

There are a few interesting things that I would like to note:

  • I have only given one work the score of 0/10. This work was the video game ‘Days Gone’ and I still completely stand by my decision to give it this score. Absolutely abysmal.
  • On the other hand, I still have not given a single work the score of 10/10. Sometimes I wonder what work will receive my first 10/10. Whatever it is, it will be a bloody masterpiece.
  • All that being said, 0/10 and 10/10 aren’t the only scores that I am hesitant to give out. The number of 1/10 and 9/10 scores combined only makes up about 3.6% of my total reviews. About 96.2% of my total reviews range between the 2/10 and 8/10 scores, inclusive.
  • The distribution of scores is fairly normal except the large spike in 7/10’s. I believe that the large spike in the 7/10 score is due to the fact that I (mostly) actively seek out art/entertainment that I believe I will enjoy. This would also explain why the 6/10 and 8/10 scores are slightly higher as well.

Anyways, thank you to all of the people that have read any of my reviews at any point in the last year. I plan on continuing to write reviews as long as I am alive so look forward to more in the future. To another year of writing reviews!

  1. I always find things like this fascinating. I rarely give out full marks too – I guess full marks means there’s literally no room for improvement and that’s a rare thing indeed!
Congrats on one year by the way 🙂

    1. As far as my rating system goes, full marks doesn’t mean “literally no room for improvement”. A lot of things I would give a 10/10 to have room for improvement. What makes a 10/10 for me is that, taken as a whole, it is literally a masterpiece. It is hugely ambitious and succeeds in that ambition with flying colours. It is the pinnacle of its art form.

As for movies you have given full marks to, I have only seen you do it twice: John Wick 3 and Avengers: Endgame. I loved that you gave John Wick 3 full marks as I gave it a 9/10 and its probably my favourite movie of the past couple years.
